It was very sad to learn today of John's passing.  John lived only a few blocks from my house and he and I were together quite often, most notably when we played softball at Roosevelt Park where John played right field for our team.  He was fast and a good hitter.

I talked to Mary Ann Schroeder (wife of the brother Chuck of John Schroeder) who passed on the following information for John:

John had both an undergraduate (UWM) and graduate (U of Hawaii) degree in Geology and Meterology.  He taught said subjects at the Rio Salodo CC of Mesa Arizona where John lived.  John had developed Thyroid cancer and went into what was considered as a routine surgery for the removal after which complications developed and John died the same day of the surgery which was April 21, 2001.  John was 54.  John left a wife and 2 daughters.

I remember John as a very good baseball player. We played ball at Roosevelt Park and had  many pick-up games an Newman Park at 76th St. and 36 Ave. We always wanted him on our team. I think held the record for the most broken windows at Newman Park.

In the Winter we would start at the top of the alley behind John's house on 38th Ave and sled down the alley past Pam Zeihn's house on 37th Ave. Most of the neighborhood and his brother Chuck would turn out on those snowy Winter days.

Rest in Peace John
